Welcome to the Indiana section of SAE International.

With an international membership exceeding 56,000, the Society of Automotive Engineers can be found all across the United States as well as around the world in countries such as Brazil, India, China, Russia, Romania, and Egypt. The society that coined the term automotive included members like Thomas Edison, Orville Wright, and Henry Ford.

Today, the Indiana Section of SAE consists of 1200 members from around the state. Most notably, the Indiana Section presents the annual Louis Schwitzer Award following the Indianaplis 500.

Engineering Innovation Excellence

Since 1967, the Indiana section of SAE International has presented the Louis Schwitzer Award for engineering innovation and excellence at the Indianapolis 500. Named for early racing pioneer, Louis Schwitzer, the award is granted to developers of new concepts and technologies in motorsports. Many important devices and technologies have emerged winners of the award, including: the HANS device, SAFER Barrier, and Earpiece Sensor System.
